In Thai: ยำ (yum) is used to describe the sensory experience of tasting sweet, sour, salty, and umami flavors in carefully orchestrated succession.
Individual flavor-packed components are mixed together in soups, salads, and other stir fry dishes to achieve this culinary effect. A lot of dishes have ยำ (yum) in the name. The term over time evolved to include describing the style of dishes that are designed to highlight the ยำ (yum) experience.
